    Reading comprehension (25 marks)


    Q1. Read the following texts and complete the exercises.


    A- David Beckham was born in 1975 in England. He is very tall and good-looking, with very short blond hair. He prefers casual clothes, such as sweaters, T-shirts and jackets. Beckham was a talented footballer at school, and in 1992, he started playing for Manchester United. With United, Beckham won one European Champions League and a lot of other leagues and cups. However, Beckham did not play well for England in his first World Cup in 1998, but he did better in 2002 when he was captain. In 2003, Beckham moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

    B- Trevor Baylis was born in London in 1937. When he grew up, he became a champion swimmer in Berlin. Then he went to college to study engineering. Later, he had his own company that built swimming pools. He also worked on TV as a special kind of swimmer. One day in 1991, Trevor Baylis was watching a TV programme about communication problems in South Africa. Baylis thought he had to do something to help. He worked for three years to build a wind-up radio that doesn’t need a lot of power, but no one believed his idea. In 1994, Baylis had his big chance on TV. He turned the handle for 2 minutes and the radio worked for 15 minutes.
